Sun and Moon
Prologue
The wind swept against the tall grass, flattening it. The fading moon, still hung in the morning sky. A beautiful, orange she-cat, sat alone in the meadow, the wind ruffling her fur. She peered around at the open field, there was a small, grey shape, running through the tall grass. “Moonpaw!” She called. He raced over, the rising sun giving him a golden outline.
“Sunpaw.” He panted. “I’m so glad you came.” He purred.
She licked his ear, but her eyes were full of sorrow. “Why must you leave?” She whispered. Inside, she knew why, it was Bloodclaw that had framed him. He had once been in her clan, but he was chased out after Bloodclaw claimed that he killed Crushkit. It was all a lie, but the clan didn’t know it. “I will soon prove to the clan that you are innocent! I promise.” She meowed. He frowned slightly.
“I will be okay, don’t worry Sunpaw.....” He meowed quietly. “Well, the sun is rising, you must go back to camp. I must go.” He meowed. Sunpaw licked his ear again.
“Good luck....” She meowed sadly. He nodded, then shot off into the distance. She stood there until the grey tom was totally out of sight, before padding back onto the forest.
Chapter 1
Sunpaw lifted her head, drowsily. Last night, she had spoken to Moonpaw, for possibly the last time. Frightening thoughts, swirled in her head. What if he died? Or what if the clan never did here the truth? She thought. She stood, shaking off her moss. The other apprentices were gone, except Foxpaw, who was still sleeping. “Foxpaw! Wake up! We have training to do!” She whispered, prodding the she-cat, lightly. Foxpaw stirred, then looked up sleepily.
“Wha?” She meowed, drowsily. “Oh, training!” She meowed, leaping up. “See ya!” She yowled, rushing out the exit of the den. Sunpaw sighed. She missed having Moonpaw wait for her to go training. Nothing was the same without him. She trotted outside, the sunlight immediately blinded her. She squinted around the camp. She could make out the shapes of Elders chatting with one another, outside their den. The Deputy, also her mentor, was deep in conversation with Dawnstar. She padded over to them. “What about training?” Mewed Sunpaw. Snowstorm turned her ice-blue gaze to Sunpaw.
“Yes of course. We will chat later Dawnstar?” She questioned. Dawnstar nodded. Snowstorm blinked gratefully at him, then leapt off the rock she had been sitting on. She flicked her tail for Sunpaw to follow. “Today we will do fighting.” She meowed. Sunpaw’s tail lashed back and forth, in excitement. They stopped at the training hollow, the sandy floor felt warm and comfy, under her paws. Snowstorm padded to one side of the hollow. Sunpaw watched her mentor closely, she wanted to be just like her. Snowstorm stopped, then turned to her apprentice.
“Attack me.” She said simply. Sunpaw gave her an unsure glance, but got ready to leap. She jumped right for her, claws extended, this was how she saw the older apprentices do it. Snowstorm jumped to the left, and Sunpaw fell flat on her face. The warm sand, stopped her from terrible injuries.
“Try again, this time try to use a little trickery.” She instructed, patiently, her eyes danced with mischief. Sunpaw leapt again, this time she leapt to one side, pretending to be going for Snowstorms tail. When Snowstorm looked in the wrong direction, Sunpaw quickly landed, then bounced back at her. Snowstorm was caught off guard. She staggered backwards. “That, that was great Sunpaw! Not many apprentices as young as you, could manage a trick like that!” Her mentor exclaimed. Sunpaw held her head high, as they headed back to camp. As they arrived, there was a terrible stench, of blood.
Chapter 2
“What’s happened!?!” Yowled Snowstorm. Sunpaw’s eyes suddenly opened wide, with terror.
“It’s, it’s, Hailpelt.......” Sunpaw whispered. Snowstorms eyes filled with grief for her brother. Just then, the other warriors and apprentices raced into camp.
“What’s going on?” Yowled Ravenwing. Then she saw it. “Hailpelt!” She gasped.
Dawnstar leapt out of his den. “What was the commotion about?” He yowled, above the murmuring cats.
“Hailpelt’s dead!” Yowled Lionclaw. Dawnstar looked over his blood-stained pelt. Bloodclaw staggered out from behind some brambles, he had a nasty cut across his eye and his shoulder was bloody. “I, I, tried to save him..... It was rogues! They attacked.....” He trailed off. Then he swayed, Ravenwing leapt over to help. He’s lying! It was him! Thought Sunpaw, angrily. At least he wasn’t claiming that it was Moonpaw. Dawnstar sighed.
“Foxpaw, Springpaw, you two are to bury him.” He meowed sadly.
Foxpaw flattened her ears, she opened her mouth to protest, but her sister gave her a stern look. “First, we will sit vigil for Hailpelt.” He meowed. Snowstorm sat with her other brother, Arcticstorm. Ravenwing sat by Dawnstar. Sunpaw wasn’t all that close to Hailpelt, so she padded over to the apprentice den. Sunpaw spotted Heartflower leading Bloodclaw into her den. She shook her head, then fell asleep in the comfortable moss. Her dreams were full of blood and death. The skies were stained black, there was horrible twisting winds. The sound of screeching cats filled her mind. Then she fell into darkness.
“Wake up Sunpaw!!!!” Yowled a familiar voice.
Chapter 3
Sunpaw woke with a start, Foxpaw was prodding her with her paw. Springpaw looked over at her worriedly. “Are you okay Sunpaw?” Asked Springpaw, seriously.
“No, no, I’m fine.... Just a bad dream.” Sunpaw mumbled. Relief spread across her sisters face. Snowstorm padded over to the den.
“Tonight is the gathering!” Snowstorm exclaimed. Sunpaw lifted her tail high. This could be her first time. Snowstorm flicked her tail. “Lets go hunting.” She meowed.
“Sounds great!” She replied, enthusiastically. They padded along Crystal Brook, slowly. The reflections of the forest in the brook rippled. There was a light breeze. Snowstorm suddenly stiffened, there was strong scent of Crystalclan bear by. Snowstorm quietly crept towards the scent. Sunpaw could make out the outlines of a few cats huddled.
“What are you doing here?!!?” Yowled Snowstorm. The cats whirled around, their eyes were pale and gloomy.” Speak!”Snowstorm growled. A small, old looking tom spoke first.
“We, we are only loners.... Chased out of our farm by a huge band of rogues! There were so many....” He meowed quietly. Snowstorms eyes softened, just a little.
“I’m sorry you were chased out, but we can’t have other cats sharing our hunting grounds.....” She meowed.
“Spare us! We will leave, but where?” Another tom cried.
“Well, there is always the old twoleg house over there.”She meowed, flicking her tail north.
“Thank you!” The old tom meowed gratefully. They stood up, and leapt off towards the twoleg home.
Sunpaw watched them leave.
“We’d better get hunting!” Snowstorm meowed. Sunpaw nodded, then clawed up a tree to catch a squirrel. She returned with it in her jaws. The cats padded back to camp, the thought of the strange loner cats in their heads.
Chapter 4
Moonpaw stalked along the border with his old clan. Earthclan wasn’t his home anymore.... He had to learn to be loner. At least for now. He thought. He suddenly shivered, there was another cat around here. There was a loud hiss, and he was tackled. He squirmed, to see what was happening. A huge tom, had him by the scruff, and dragged him away. He wanted to yowl out, but no one would come, care even. The tom dragged him along at a swift pace, his fur getting matted and muddy. The cat came to a stop, and dropped him, but instead of landing on the ground immediately, he fell down, down, it all got darker. Then he landed with a thud, on a soft cushiony, pile of moss. Moonpaw could just make out the tom staring down at him. He sighed, it was to high up to climb. He peered around, suddenly, there were many pairs of eyes staring at him. “Who are you?” Spoke a loud, menacing voice.
“I, I was thrown down in this pit by that tom up there.” He meowed, flicking his tail up to the tom.
“I see.” The voice meowed simply. “Come with us.”
Moonpaw followed slowly. Who were these strange cats? He thought. The cats led him through seemingly, hundreds of tunnels. The leading cat came to a stop in a huge, cavern. There was a crack of sunlight shining in through the ceiling. He glanced around, trying to absorb all the details about this strange place. There was a ledge in the far back wall, he guessed it was for addressing the group. It was true, the leader leapt to the ledge. The cats fell silent. “Today, another cat has been forced down into this ditch.” He meowed. “What is your name?” He inquired. Moonpaw straightened up, “I am Moonpaw.” He announced. “Are you one of those clan cats?” He asked. “Well, yes.” He lied, he wasn’t really a clanner anymore. The cats murmured amongst themselves. “We are Sandclan! A group of rougues. We all were thrown over the edge into this place, so we live as a clan now.” He meowed. “I am Storm.” He added. “Why are we here?” Moonpaw asked.
Chapter 5
Sunpaw twitched in her sleep, “Moonpaw! Moonpaw!” She yowled.
“Wake up Sunpaw!” Meowed Volepaw. Sunpaw suddenly awoke, she had another of those dreams again, but what happened to Moonpaw? She thought, probably something bad, but the puzzle pieces of the dream faded away. “Did you have another one of those crazy dreams?” Asked Volepaw.
“Ya, something to do with Moonpaw...” Sunpaw meowed quietly. Volepaw flicked her ears.
“But didn’t Moonpaw kill Crushkit?” She whispered. Sunpaw shook her head sadly.
“It was all a lie, Moonpaw didn’t do that, it was Bloodclaw.”She meowed. “ I know it.” Sunpaw gave Volepaw one last glance , before padding out of the den. Today it was a gloomy, colder day. Snowstorm padded over to her.
“Would you like to train with Volepaw and Ravenwing?” She asked. “I have some buisness to take care of today, sorry.” She added.
“Well I guess that’s okay.” She meowed. Ravenwing padded over, Volepaw padded out of the apprentice den and sat by her mentor.
“Are you ready, Sunpaw?” Ravenwing asked. Sunpaw nodded. They trekked through the forest in search of prey. Suddenly, there was faint growling sound.
“What’s going on?” Whispered Volepaw.
“Just keep quiet....” Ravenwing whispered. Sunpaw looked around for some cats to reveal themselves at any time. But before she could turn, there was a loud snarl. She was suddenly lifted into the air.
“Ravenwing!” She yowled. Sunpaw spotted Ravenwing leaping from a tree. With her claws extended, she leapt at the huge creature. The monster dropped her, and lashed its claws at Ravenwing. The only think she can see anymore, was the huge creature’s striped back. Ravenwing was knocked aside. Sunpaw leapt straight at the creature, without even thinking. She dug her claws into its back. The creature whirled around and attempted to shake her off. She bit the creature hard, then it gave one painful growl, then lumbered away. Volepaw slowly crept out from a nearby bush. “You were so brave, Sunpaw!” She meowed. Sunpaw looked over to Ravenwing.
“We have to get her back to camp.” Sunpaw meowed. “Are you okay Ravenwing?” Volepaw pleaded. Ravenwings eyes blinked open.
“I’m okay.... “She whispered hoarsely. Volepaw blinked in relief. “What, was that thing?” Sunpaw asked anxiously. “Badger.” Ravenwing meowed. They helped Ravenwing up, then padded towards camp.
Chapter 6
Moonpaw waited for an answer from Storm. “Well, do you know Blood the rogue?” He asked. Moonpaw shook his head. “Well he has a band of rogues that attack loners, then throw them down here.” He continued. think he has“We something terrible planned for us.” He meowed sadly. “What will happen to my kits!” One she-cat wailed. Storm turned to her. “I don’t know what they plan to do...” He admitted. “I’m sorry Star...” He whispered. Star looked down at her three kittens.
“We have to escape here!” Moonpaw yowled. The clan looked over to him.
“How can we do that?” Yowled one cat.
“Its impossible to escape this pit!” Another yowled.
“Calm down!” Storm boomed. The cats fell silent. “What do you have in mind?” He asked.
“Well, I was thinking we could dig.” He said simply. There was murmuring among the cats.
“Dig? How do you mean.” Storm questioned.
“We will dig a hole in the wall, we will soon reach the meadow beside this hole. Its on lower land, so we can dig right out of the hill. We seem to be right under it.” He meowed. The leader stared around. He nodded to his clan. The clan shouted out their agreement. “We have to start soon!” Moonpaw instructed. He trotted over to the side of the cave. He dug his claws into the rocky surface. The rocks and dirt, crumbled down. “This is great! Its soft and easy to dig through!” He exclaimed. The cats raced over to help, soon there were all the Sandclan cats digging through the soil. Storm gave him a quick smile. Moonpaw returned it, then continued to dig his way through the dirt.
Chapter 7
Sunpaw sat alone in the clearing, she and Volepaw had just brought Ravenwing to the medicine cat. She sighed, wishing she had Moonpaw here with her. It would never be the same until he returned again. What if he never returns? She thought anxiously. Her mind was only on him, she couldn’t think about anything else. Suddenly Dawnstars voice invaded her thoughts. “Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey, meet here at the Great Tree for a clan meeting. “The cats who will be going to the gathering are: Snowstorm, Arcticstorm, Lionclaw, Silverbrook, Thunderstorm, Owlfeather, Sunpaw, and Volepaw!” He boomed. The clan murmered quietly. “Tigerstripe, you are in charge of the camp for now.” He meowed. Sunpaw looked over to Volepaw, she was slightly startled for being picked. Dawnstar flicked his tail to his group of cats to follow. Volepaw and Sunpaw charged after them. They raced into the forest, and across the beach to Pearl Cave. Dawnstar came to a stop at the entrance. They seemed to be the last clan to arrive. “Sorry.” Muttered Dawnstar, before taking his place on the rock ledge. Wolfstar, spoke first.
“Crystal clan has been attacked by a group of rogues almost a moon ago. We found evidence that they are still around.” He meowed.
“We had cats stealing prey on our beach!” Arcticstar of Oceanclan growled. “None of you getting sneaky?” She asked suspiciously. Dawnstar looked to her calmly.
“It wasn’t Earthclan.” He meowed.
“Breezeclan patrols have spotted a group of rogues charging about.” Cinderstar meowed.
“No rogues would dare get near our clan! It was an Earthclan cat, I know it!” Arcticstar yowled.
“I saw it! It smelled of Earthclan!” another Oceanclan warrior yowled.
“We wouldn’t!” Snarled Dawnstar. Suddenly, there was no light in the cave. The cats looked up through the hole in ceiling. The moon was covered by clouds.
“You have angered Starclan!” Yowled Heartflower. The clans slowly parted, leaving for camp.
